Italy recently announced it is seizing over 200 million euros (about $232 million) in assets tied to the late Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. These assets were linked to drug trafficking and stretched across Europe and beyond.
Messina Denaro, who ran Sicily’s Castelvetrano clan, spent three decades evading capture before he was arrested in January 2023. He passed away just months after his arrest while serving multiple life sentences in prison. His wealth, amassed since the 1980s, was uncovered by Italy’s financial police, known as Guardia di Finanza. They stated that the investigation revealed substantial sums of money from drug trade reinvested in various countries, including Spain, Andorra, and Switzerland.

The police’s high-tech approach, including drones and thermal scanners, allowed them to find concealed assets like luxury resorts on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
Italy’s chief anti-Mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Melillo, described this operation as crucial. He noted that it not only tracks down illicit wealth but also disrupts the Mafia’s ability to regroup following Messina Denaro’s death.
Messina Denaro was notorious as one of the last major figures of the Cosa Nostra, alongside infamous bosses like Salvatore “Toto” Riina and Bernardo Provenzano. His long criminal career included orchestrating violent acts, such as the bombings in the 1990s that killed anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. This history contributes to his legacy as a complex and deeply feared character within organized crime.
Before his capture, Messina Denaro managed to live under the radar, even seeking cancer treatment using a false identity. His capture took place at a clinic in Palermo, drawing public attention and applause as many celebrated the arrest of a long-time fugitive. Following his arrest, he maintained connections with the Mafia, although he was ultimately unable to escape justice.
