Ortega also pointed out that tariffs are adding to the increasing costs of beef. The U.S. relies on imported lean trimmings to mix with local fattier beef for ground beef blends. Former President Trump previously threatened a 50% tariff on Brazilian beef imports. If that happens, we could see even higher prices for ground beef and hamburger.
Extreme weather is another concern for beef production. Drought and high temperatures impact the environment, making it harder to recover food supplies. A study from 2025 examined how rising food prices related to extreme weather events, noting how heatwaves in Asia led to spikes in rice and onion prices.
Producers are trying to build back their herds, but it’s a slow process. It can take up to three years to raise a new cow from birth to breeding age. Many ranchers, like Calli Williams from South Dakota, still face financial fallout from the pandemic, citing the tough times they’re enduring.
To help secure food supplies, experts recommend diversifying supply chains. A study published in Nature found that having varied food sources can enhance resilience against food supply shocks by 15%. Additionally, farmers are trying drought-resistant practices, such as better feed storage and rotating grazing during dry years, according to the USDA.
