LONDON (AP) — Kate, the Princess of Wales, made a delightful return to Wimbledon this past Sunday. She was joined by her husband, Prince William, and their two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to watch the men’s final featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

As the All England Club’s patron, Kate had the honor of presenting the winner’s trophy to Sinner after his victory over Alcaraz, with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. This appearance marks an important moment for Kate, who is gradually resuming her public duties following her recent cancer treatment.

On Saturday, Kate also attended the women’s final, where she presented Iga Swiatek with her trophy after an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win, and offered encouragement to runner-up Amanda Anisimova.

The royal family wasn’t alone at the event. They were joined by King Felipe VI of Spain, several former Wimbledon champions, and a host of Hollywood stars like Keira Knightley, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, and John Lithgow. London Mayor Sadiq Khan was also in attendance.

Before Sunday’s men’s final, the family chatted with Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. These two became the first all-British duo to claim the men’s doubles title in nearly 90 years, a significant achievement for the hosts.

After the match, Sinner shared a warm moment with the royals. Kate introduced him to her children, and after complimenting his performance by calling it “seriously inspiring and impressive,” Sinner engaged Prince George and Princess Charlotte with a playful question about their own tennis skills. George, 11, confirmed he plays, and Sinner even signed tennis balls for both kids.

In his post-match news conference, Sinner expressed how special it was to have the royal family watching. “You see how much they care about tennis and the sport itself. It’s very prestigious,” he said, highlighting the weight such recognition lends to an athlete’s achievements.

It’s been a journey for Kate. Last year, while recovering from her illness, she missed the women’s final but did attend Alcaraz’s win against Novak Djokovic. Recently, she also hosted French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Britain.
