Great news! Dr. Adam Rengstorf is the new Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Sciences, starting September 1. He has been with Purdue University Northwest since 2005, joining the Physics and Astronomy department. Over the years, he’s held various leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics.
Dr. Rengstorf isn’t just about titles. He’s made significant changes in his department. He led strong recruitment efforts and updated the teaching labs to benefit students. Even with budget challenges, he made sure undergraduates got to present their research at important conferences.
Reflecting on his time as chair, Dr. Rengstorf said, “The best part was helping faculty and students succeed. I’m excited to continue that here as Associate Dean.”
In his new position, he will focus on:
- Support & Collaboration: Helping with strategic planning and representing the college in university initiatives.
- Academic Program Oversight: Working on program quality and accreditation standards.
- Student Success: Promoting retention and experiential learning.
- Faculty Development: Supporting mentoring and professional growth.
- Research & Education: Encouraging faculty and student research and interdisciplinary collaborations.
- External Engagement: Building relationships with alumni and industry partners.
Dr. Rengstorf’s appointment comes at a time when universities are looking to enhance STEM programs. According to recent data, over 60% of jobs now require skills in science, technology, engineering, and math. His background in astronomy and hands-on training at the Northwest Indiana Robotic Observatory makes him a perfect fit for this role.
As for the department of Chemistry and Physics, Dr. Nicoleta Tarfulea will serve as Interim Chair during the transition. An internal search for a permanent chair is already underway.
Join me in congratulating Dr. Rengstorf! His experience will help elevate the college’s mission in STEM education and further academic excellence in our community.
