The latest report from Forbes reveals that billionaires around the world are enjoying unprecedented wealth. According to their 39th annual list, there are now 3,028 billionaires, the highest number ever recorded. They collectively hold an astonishing $16.1 trillion, which is $2 trillion more than just a year ago.

Chase Peterson-Withorn, a senior editor at Forbes, shared insights on how the magazine compiles this list. It requires a team of over 100 reporters who analyze assets, investments, and even the extravagant purchases of the ultra-wealthy, from art to yachts. They dive into legal records and conduct interviews to establish the true worth of these individuals.
The United States leads the pack with 902 billionaires. Following are China and Hong Kong with 516 and India with 205. The top of the list features familiar names:
- Elon Musk ($342 billion) – Co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX
- Mark Zuckerberg ($216 billion) – Co-founder of Facebook and CEO of Meta
- Jeff Bezos ($215 billion) – Founder of Amazon
- Larry Ellison ($192 billion) – Co-founder of Oracle
- Bernard Arnault ($178 billion) – Head of luxury brand LVMH
- Warren Buffett ($154 billion) – CEO of Berkshire Hathaway
- Larry Page ($144 billion) – Co-founder of Google
- Sergey Brin ($138 billion) – Co-founder of Google
- Amancio Ortega ($124 billion) – Founder of Zara’s parent company, Inditex
- Steve Ballmer ($118 billion) – Former CEO of Microsoft
Public sentiment towards billionaires has shifted notably in recent years. The aftermath of the Great Recession and movements like Occupy Wall Street in 2011 spotlighted the divide between the wealthy and the rest. Peterson-Withorn noted that there’s a mix of admiration and criticism aimed at billionaires today. For example, when former President Trump, himself a billionaire, surrounded his administration with others like Musk, it sparked diverse responses.
Interestingly, many believe that implementing a minimum tax of 2% on the ultra-wealthy could generate an additional $250 billion per year. Such proposals showcase a growing call for equitable wealth distribution.
While billionaires wield more influence than ever, their reputations are a mixed bag. Some individuals, like Musk, face protests regarding their roles in government. Despite the backlash, billionaires continue to hold significant power and resources.
