It’s a rite of passage we all face at some point – jury duty. Even celebrities like Reese Witherspoon have stories to tell. Recently, she shared a memorable experience on “The Graham Norton Show.”
A few years after starring in “Legally Blonde,” Witherspoon had to serve on a jury for a dog bite case in Beverly Hills. This trial lasted two weeks, and it was quite an experience for her.
When it was time to choose a jury foreman, everyone turned to her. Witherspoon recalled how surprised she was. “Me! Me!” she exclaimed, while singer Ariana Grande, who was also a guest, simply smiled and said, “Well, yeah.”
Confused, Witherspoon asked, “Why did you pick me?” The answer? “You went to law school.” This reference was a playful nod to her character, Elle Woods, from the 2001 film. In the movie, she famously declares, “What, like it’s hard?” when applying to Harvard Law School.
Witherspoon quickly clarified to her fellow jurors that she hadn’t actually attended law school — her only experience with the law was acting in a movie. “I like, played a lawyer in a movie once!” she joked.
She also touched on the seriousness of jury service. Witherspoon emphasized that misunderstandings about the law can lead to real problems. She noticed some jurors seemed to want to convict the defendant based on her appearance rather than the facts of the case.
When asked about the verdict, Witherspoon explained that it boiled down to a basic rule of safety: don’t interfere in a dogfight. “What did your mother always tell you? Don’t put your hand in a dogfight!” she advised.
Will Ferrell, also a guest on the show, made everyone laugh when he joked, “I’ve always told my children, ‘Put your hands in dogfights!’ I feel terrible!”
This light-hearted exchange highlighted the importance of understanding the legal system and making fair decisions, even in a courtroom. Witherspoon and Ferrell are set to star together in the upcoming Amazon Prime comedy “You’re Cordially Invited,” which premieres on January 30.
