Angie Stone, the talented soul singer, has passed away at 63. She was known for her powerful voice and her journey in music, starting with the groundbreaking hip-hop group, the Sequence.
Sadly, Stone’s life ended in a car accident early Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama. According to a representative, she was returning from a performance with her band when her vehicle flipped. She was the only one who lost her life in the crash.
Stone gained fame with her hit song “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” in 2001. This track showcased her rich, husky vocals and sampled the classic tune “Backstabbers” by the O’Jays. Over her career, she released 10 solo albums and received three Grammy nominations, including nods for best R&B performance and best female R&B vocal performance.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Angie began her music career at the age of 16 as a member of the Sequence, the first female hip-hop group signed to Sugar Hill Records. They became famous for their 1979 hit, “Funk You Up,” which has been sampled in many modern songs, like “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.
After the Sequence disbanded, she joined Vertical Hold and released two albums. She also contributed to D’Angelo’s celebrated works, “Brown Sugar” and “Voodoo,” even supporting him on tour.
In the late 1990s, she signed with J Records and launched her solo career with her debut album, “Black Diamond.” This began her rise in the neo-soul movement. Her second album, “Mahogany Soul,” delivered hits like “Brotha” and reinforced her place in music. While “Mahogany Soul” became her standout album, she continued to produce music, with her latest release titled “Love Language” in 2023.
Beyond music, Stone made appearances on VH1 shows like “Celebrity Fit Club” and “R&B Divas: Atlanta.” She also acted in movies like “The Hot Chick” and “The Fighting Temptations.” Last year, she was honored with an induction into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Angie Stone is survived by her daughter Diamond and son Michael. Her legacy will live on through her unforgettable voice and contributions to music.
