Remembering Danielle Spencer: The Heartfelt Legacy of Dee from ‘What’s Happening!!’ After Her Passing at 60

Danielle Spencer, known for her role as Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, passed away at 60 after a long fight with cancer. She was hospitalized in Richmond, VA, where her family gathered to support her.

Danielle brought life to the character Dee, a smart and witty younger sister. She was famous for her catchphrase, “Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama.” The show, which aired on ABC from 1976 to 1979, was groundbreaking for focusing on the lives of Black teenagers in Los Angeles.

Tragically, Danielle suffered a severe car accident at just 12 years old. This incident caused her to spend weeks in a coma and led to long-term health issues that required several surgeries. Despite this, she embraced her acting career and later became a veterinarian, earning her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University in 1993.

In her interview with Jet magazine, Danielle reflected on her unexpected rise to fame. “I had never seen any young Black girl in that type of spotlight,” she shared, highlighting the significance of her role on television.

On social media, co-star Haywood Nelson remembered her fondly as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior.” He noted that her legacy as a “Shero” would be remembered.

Interestingly, statistics from recent studies show that representation in entertainment positively impacts young viewers’ self-esteem. Danielle’s role likely inspired many young Black girls during her time. Today, these conversations continue as people seek more diverse portrayals in media.

Alongside her acting career, Danielle remained a champion for animal rights. She was involved in various animal advocacy efforts, blending her passion for pets with her medical expertise.
