Remembering Johnny Rodriguez: The Iconic Mexican American Singer of the ’70s Country Music Era Passes Away at 73

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Country music legend Johnny Rodriguez has passed away at the age of 73. He was known for his soulful hits in the 1970s, including “I Just Can’t Get Her Out of My Mind” and “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico.” His daughter, Aubry Rodriguez, shared that he died peacefully in San Antonio due to health complications, surrounded by family.

Aubry described her father as a beloved musician whose music touched millions. “Dad was not only legendary,” she said, “but also a caring husband, father, and friend.” He was named the most promising male vocalist at the 1972 Academy of Country Music Awards, and his debut album was nominated for album of the year in 1973. Over his career, more than a dozen of his albums and singles reached the Top 10.

Rodriguez faced challenges later in life, including struggles with drug and alcohol use, which he said impacted his career. Born in Sabinal, Texas, he grew up in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a controversial event in 1999, Rodriguez was acquitted of murder after shooting an acquaintance he believed was a burglar. The incident was a turning point in his life. Despite setbacks, he continued to perform in South Texas and was honored with an induction into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Rodriguez’s story reflects both the highs and lows of a music career. His music has left a lasting imprint on country music, inspiring a new generation of artists. In 2022, a survey found that 73% of respondents considered him a pioneer in the genre, highlighting his enduring influence.

His legacy is celebrated not only through his songs but also via social media, where fans share their favorite moments and stories about how his music impacted their lives. Johnny Rodriguez’s passion and talent will be missed, but his music will continue to resonate with many.
