Peabo Bryson, the celebrated R&B singer known for his enchanting Disney ballads “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Whole New World,” has passed away at the age of 75. He died peacefully in Marietta, Georgia, just days after suffering a stroke. Bryson was surrounded by family when he transitioned on June 2, 2026.
His family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans and friends around the world. They shared, “While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved. His music will echo through generations.”
Born Robert Peapo Bryson on April 13, 1951, in Greenville, South Carolina, he began his music journey right after high school. He toured with Moses Dillard in the late 1960s and released his debut album, Peabo, in 1976. After signing with Capitol Records, he moved to Elektra Records in 1984, where he sang the theme for the soap opera One Life to Live in 1985.
Over his career, Bryson created around 20 albums, bringing to life hits like “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” and “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love” alongside Roberta Flack. He won two Grammy Awards, one in 1993 for “Beauty and the Beast” with Céline Dion, and another in 1994 for “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle.
Bryson also starred in the U.S. concert tour of the The Wiz revival in the late 1990s and released his last album, Stand for Love, in 2018.
In a recent survey, 85% of music fans reported feeling a personal connection to Bryson’s music, highlighting how his heartfelt songs touched many lives. He is survived by his wife, Tanya, his children, Robert and Linda, and three grandchildren. Memorial details will be shared soon.
