Voletta Wallace, the mother of hip-hop icon The Notorious B.I.G., has passed away at the age of 72. She died peacefully at her home in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, as confirmed by the Monroe County Coroner.
In her later years, Wallace spent time in hospice care, and her cause of death has been reported as natural causes.
Wallace was well-known in the hip-hop world. She raised her son, Christopher Wallace, also known as B.I.G., as a single parent in Brooklyn after his father left the family. Originally from Jamaica, she worked as a school teacher and was a strong influence in her son’s life and career.
B.I.G. was infamously murdered on March 9, 1997, in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, just after leaving a Soul Train Awards afterparty. His death came just months after rival Tupac Shakur was killed, intensifying the rivalry between East Coast and West Coast hip-hop artists.
B.I.G., a protégé of Sean “Diddy” Combs, has left a lasting legacy in music. While some speculated about Diddy’s involvement in the ongoing tensions during that era, he was never charged in connection with Tupac’s murder.
In a related case, former gang leader Duane “Keefe D” Davis was arrested in 2023 and charged with Tupac’s murder, claiming his innocence as he awaits trial, which has been delayed until February 2026.
This is a significant moment for the hip-hop community. Voletta Wallace’s impact and the legacy of her son will continue to resonate in music and culture.
