Retired DT Aaron Donald Considering Comeback to NFL

Former NFL defensive lineman Aaron Donald is contemplating a return to football, particularly following the Los Angeles Rams acquisition of pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. During a conversation with Jordan Schultz, Donald stated, “I’m for sure flirting with the idea. Helluva an opportunity with the Super Bowl in SoFi this year. If I can find the fire, it’s a possibility.”

In a text exchange with ESPN’s Pat McAfee concerning the Garrett trade, the 35-year-old Donald mentioned, “It for sure got me thinking,” adding that he needs to see if “that fire can light back up” after being out of the NFL for two years.

Donald was drafted by the Rams 13th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, becoming one of the most dominant defensive tackles in league history. He earned Pro Bowl honors in all ten of his seasons, received eight first-team All-Pro selections, and was named Defensive Player of the Year three times. Donald played a significant role in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory in 2021.

The Rams have become Super Bowl favorites following the trade for Garrett, which cost them standout edge defender Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-rounder for 2027. With Donald’s potential return, he would join an already formidable defensive lineup that includes Garrett, Byron Young, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Poona Ford.

After retiring in March 2024 with one year remaining on a three-year, $95 million extension, Donald’s exit from the team created $33 million in dead money over the last two seasons. Currently, the Rams have approximately $16.34 million in spending room, according to OverTheCap.
