The tragic death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner, has raised concerns about food poisoning. Costa Rican authorities announced that an initial investigation ruled out asphyxiation, which was initially suspected. They warned that it might be months before the exact cause of Miller’s sudden passing is confirmed.
Investigators have stated that Miller’s airways were clear. Due to the circumstances surrounding his death at a luxury resort near Manuel Antonio National Park, authorities have sent samples for toxicology and histology testing, among other analyses. Results from these tests are expected to take around two to three months, largely because the forensic labs are currently overburdened with cases.
Miller, along with his brother Hunter and parents Brett and Jessica, were staying at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort when he fell ill. He was found unresponsive in his bed, raising alarm for the family and resort staff.
Initial fears suggested he may have choked after vomiting, but food poisoning is still a possibility under investigation. Local eateries, such as Restaurant Le Papillon, have responded to the situation, emphasizing their distance from the tragedy and clarifying that the Gardners had dined there three days prior to Miller’s death.
The resort is also cooperating with authorities but has stressed that the cause of the incident remains unclear. The situation is undeniably sad for the Gardner family, who are now working to return Miller’s body to the U.S.
Food poisoning can occur from a variety of sources, including contaminated water or unsafe handling of food. A recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that every year, 1 in 6 Americans become ill from foodborne illnesses. Symptoms can range from mild stomach cramps to severe conditions requiring hospitalization. In this case, it serves as a grim reminder of how quickly things can change during what should be a joyful family vacation.
Brett Gardner, who played for the Yankees for 14 seasons, has been a celebrated figure in baseball. Now, he and his family face an unimaginable loss that has caught the attention of fans and the whole sports community.
