Revolutionizing India’s Defense: MoD Secures Landmark HAL Contract for 97 LCA Mk1A Jets

On September 25, 2025, the Indian Ministry of Defence made a significant move by signing a contract worth Rs. 62,370 crore (about $7 billion) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This deal involves acquiring 97 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A jets for the Indian Air Force, including 68 single-seat fighters and 29 two-seat trainers. It’s a huge boost for India’s Tejas fighter fleet, part of the broader Make in India initiative.

HAL is set to begin deliveries in 2027-28, completing the handover of all jets within six years. This is the largest order yet for the Mk1A version, following a previous contract for 83 Tejas Mk1A jets valued at around Rs. 48,000 crore, signed in January 2021. The inclusion of these 97 jets will help modernize the IAF’s fleet, gradually retiring older models like the MiG-21 and MiG-27.

The Mk1A is a major upgrade featuring over 64% indigenous content and 67 new locally-made components. Key advancements include the UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and other cutting-edge systems. These features significantly boost India’s air combat capabilities.

This contract falls under the government’s “Buy (India-IDDM)” category and supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is expected to create around 11,750 jobs each year over six years, strengthening India’s aerospace sector through local manufacturing. Approximately 105 Indian companies will be involved in producing parts for these aircraft.

The Tejas Mk1A’s advanced technology enhances its role as a crucial air combat asset. Presently, India has contracted for 180 Tejas Mk1A jets, indicating a strategic shift towards self-reliance in defense. The growing capability of the LCA Mk1A reflects the nation’s commitment to enhancing both security and domestic manufacturing.

According to recent statistics, defense spending in India is projected to increase by 1.5% annually over the next five years, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to modernization and self-sufficiency in defense capabilities. As India invests in its military technology, it not only aims to fortify national security but also to position itself as a competitive player in the global aerospace market.

All these developments show how initiatives like Make in India can strengthen India’s defense sector while creating local jobs and boosting the economy.
