The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recently launched the ICG Ship ‘Amulya’ in Goa. This marks an exciting development for India’s coastal defense and its local shipbuilding industry. ‘Amulya’ is the third ship in a series of eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels, designed to boost maritime security.
Built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), ‘Amulya’ stretches 51 meters and sets a new benchmark for local shipbuilding. Over 60% of its parts come from Indian suppliers. The ship’s name, meaning “priceless,” reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense, echoing the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Powered by two advanced 3000 KW diesel engines, ‘Amulya’ can reach speeds of up to 27 knots and travel 1,500 nautical miles. This allows it to conduct extended missions in Indian waters. The vessel is armed with cutting-edge technological systems, enhancing its agility and operational capacity.
‘Amulya’ will perform a variety of operations, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and anti-smuggling missions. This added capability will improve the Coast Guard’s readiness for emergencies and enhance pollution response efforts.
Stationed at Paradip, Odisha, the ship operates under the North East Coast Guard Commander, led by Commandant (JG) Anupam Singh and a dedicated crew of five officers and 34 members.
The launch event was presided over by Shri Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary (IC), alongside various dignitaries from the ICG, government, and GSL. This commissioning represents a major advancement in the Indian Coast Guard’s fleet expansion, significantly strengthening coastal security and maritime governance.
According to recent reports, the Indian defense sector has seen a rise in local manufacturing, with data showing a 20% increase in homegrown defense products over the past two years. Such developments underline a pivotal shift toward bolstering national security through indigenous capabilities.
In social media circles, the launch has sparked discussions around India’s growing naval prowess. Many users express pride in the local shipbuilding achievements and the enhanced safety for coastal regions. As the country invests in its maritime forces, the ongoing dialogue reflects an increasing public interest in security matters.
