Two nonprofits in Richmond came together to spread holiday cheer this Christmas. What began as a simple food giveaway transformed into a festive event filled with toys and community warmth.
Darryl Johnston, affectionately known as Coach Rock, teamed up with Tommy Williams and Deandre Smith from the All Equals Project. They set up a toy distribution at Johnston’s Rock Foundation on West Marshall Street.
Johnston’s drive to give back stems from his own childhood. “In ninth grade, I didn’t receive a single gift. I still remember that feeling,” he said. This memory inspires him to ensure every child experiences the joy of receiving a gift during the holidays. To extend their reach, Williams and Smith brought additional toys donated from the Elite Kings of Faith toy drive.
Among the toys were Barbie styling heads, Ninja Turtles, Hot Wheels, Legos, and even a bike for a young child learning to ride. Families lined up to pick up gifts while supplies lasted.
For Johnston, the value of a gift isn’t about its size but the gesture. “Sometimes, the smallest gift can mean the most,” he explained. He emphasized that every child should feel appreciated, regardless of the gift’s scale.
Initially, the plan only included a food giveaway with hot dogs and canned goods. However, the abundance of toys created a more festive atmosphere. Smith echoed Johnston’s sentiments, sharing that their mission is rooted in addressing the gaps they experienced as children. “We want everyone to feel cared for, especially those without family or friends,” he said.
The generosity from this event will continue beyond Saturday. Williams and Johnston plan to keep shoes and gifts available for those in need until Christmas, reflecting their commitment to supporting the community. Williams recalls his own joyful Christmases and wants to provide that same experience for others who may not have it.
Johnston believes this collaboration exemplifies true community spirit. “We came together as a community should, striving to make a difference,” he noted.
This initiative highlights an important trend: community members uniting to uplift those around them.
