As the chill of autumn sets in and the holiday season approaches, food pantries in Brown County are seeing more families seeking help. The Manna for Life Food Pantry in Green Bay is currently aiding over 100 households every day, five days a week. Operations Manager Chad Clements notes that they aren’t alone; many pantries are experiencing similar increases in demand.
In De Pere, the De Pere Christian Outreach pantry is supporting around 280 families each month. Executive Director Amy Murphy highlights the ongoing rise in families needing assistance. “We’re always seeing an uptick in families,” she says.
Rising grocery prices are a significant factor in this increased demand. Experts from the food security field suggest that when prices go up, more families turn to food pantries for help. Recent statistics show that food prices have risen by nearly 13% over the past year, making it tough for many households to make ends meet.
Amy also emphasizes the importance of community donations, particularly non-perishable items like noodles, soup, and pasta sauce. Besides food, pantries are in great need of household products, such as detergent and hygiene supplies.
