Rizwana: Championing Continuous Environmental Protection Efforts

New Noise Pollution Rules Announced

On January 9, 2026, notable strides were made in environmental protection as new rules to combat noise pollution were introduced. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the adviser for Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and Water Resources, announced these changes during a national conference in Dhaka. She emphasized the need for continuous efforts to safeguard our environment, forests, and rivers.

These rules now grant police the authority to penalize those who disregard noise pollution standards. This is a significant move, especially since urban noise has been linked to various health issues, including stress and sleep disturbances. Experts have pointed out that consistent exposure to high noise levels can lead to serious health problems, making regulation essential.

Rizwana noted that while the ban on polythene bags has been in place since 2002, its enforcement hasn’t been very effective. In everyday life, while polythene is diminished in supermarkets, it remains prevalent in local markets. Therefore, broader community involvement is needed to change habits and promote eco-friendly practices.

Recent studies have highlighted alarming levels of pollution in urban centers, contributing to the urgency for these new regulations. For instance, a 2021 report from the World Health Organization found that urban areas with high noise levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Rizwana mentioned plans for a project aimed at restoring five major rivers surrounding Dhaka. This initiative will focus on cleaning and dredging these waterways, ensuring they remain navigable and healthy.

Community action is crucial in this effort. Rizwana called on everyone to take initiative in reducing both environmental and noise pollution. Together, we can foster a healthier environment for future generations.

BAPA President Professor Nur Mohammad Talukder, along with other notable academics, supported the conference, furthering discussions on environmental protection strategies.
