On December 14, 2025, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser, announced an important step in fighting noise pollution in Bangladesh. Now, police sergeants can take direct action against noise pollution, which is a move many believe will make a real difference.
During a meeting at the Department of Environment, Rizwana highlighted that having laws is not enough; we need action. She stressed the crucial role of police in enforcing these laws. The discussion centered around the new Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2025.
Rizwana pointed out that noise pollution impacts public health and children’s development. It’s a growing concern in urban areas and requires urgent attention. She called for teamwork among various agencies to not only impose fines but also to raise awareness among the public about the effects of noise pollution.
She emphasized monitoring noise from transportation, construction sites, loudspeakers, and electronic devices. Doing so will help create a quieter environment for everyone.
A notable moment at the meeting was the recognition of Dhaka University for prohibiting fireworks and firecrackers. This move shows their commitment to improving student health and safety. Rizwana presented a crest to Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, for this initiative.
Recently, 50 sound meters were distributed to traffic sergeants of the Metropolitan Police. This allows for more accurate monitoring of noise levels within the city, making enforcement more effective.
Aside from tackling noise pollution, Rizwana spoke at a training session on lead remediation. This training focuses on creating solutions for lead pollution, which also poses serious health risks. She mentioned that resources are available to educate the public about lead sources and help avoid exposure.
A crucial point Rizwana made was that simply moving factories can shift problems rather than solve them. She called for a national lead action plan that includes mapping sources of pollution and setting clear goals for a lead-free environment.
This approach shows that with combined efforts and strict regulations, the visions for a cleaner, healthier Bangladesh can become a reality, proving that action is key in facing environmental challenges.
