Rocktown Now: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank CEO Announces Retirement – What’s Next for the Community?

VERONA, VA — Exciting changes are on the horizon for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. CEO Michael McKee announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2025, after 15 remarkable years with the organization. His early announcement gives the Board of Directors plenty of time to search for his successor and ensure a seamless transition.

Since stepping into the CEO role in 2013, McKee has made significant strides in fighting hunger in Central and Western Virginia. Under his guidance, the Food Bank has focused on improving food distribution and nutrition, particularly emphasizing fresh produce. His leadership has brought in vital investments to enhance support for partner organizations and develop innovative programs to tackle food insecurity.

This past year marked a record for the Food Bank, distributing 31 million pounds of food to those in need. Thanks to McKee’s initiatives, the organization has successfully addressed the rising demand for food assistance.

McKee’s influence reaches beyond the Food Bank. He has served as Chair of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, helping coordinate efforts among food banks across the state. In recognition of his exceptional leadership, he received the prestigious 2024 John van Hengel Fellowship Award from Feeding America.

The Board is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition. With a former Board chair leading the search committee, they are actively looking for a new CEO who will build on McKee’s legacy and guide the organization into its next chapter.
