Rohit Sharma Stays at the Helm: What His Captaincy Means for the Upcoming England Test Series

Hyderabad: Rohit Sharma, India’s cricket captain, faced harsh criticism after a tough performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. In three Tests, he scored just 10 runs, leaving fans disappointed. His last noteworthy innings was a half-century against New Zealand, where India had a rough 3-0 defeat.

This dismal run, combined with failing to qualify for the World Test Championship final, led him to step back from the final Test in Sydney. Speculation stirred about the selectors possibly reviewing his future in Test cricket. Social media erupted, with many calling for Rohit to retire from the longer format of the game.

However, things shifted when Rohit found his form again. He scored a brilliant century against England at home and helped India secure the Champions Trophy in 2025. In a press conference after the tournament, he made it clear that he intends to keep playing both ODIs and Tests. Notably, he had previously retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit’s success has likely secured his captaincy for the upcoming Test series in England later this year. According to The Indian Express, following India’s Champions Trophy win, he is set to lead the team in a five-Test series from June to August.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source noted.

In his own words, Rohit stated, “Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team. I can’t really say about 2027, because that’s too far. But I’m keeping all my options open.” He emphasized the joy and pride he feels playing for the current team, highlighting the camaraderie and fun among the players.

In recent years, the landscape of Test cricket has changed, with various players stepping back from the format. However, Rohit’s commitment showcases a passion for red-ball cricket that many seasoned players share. His return to form and ongoing leadership role will be crucial for India as they aim for success on the international stage.

As the cricket world watches, all eyes will be on the upcoming series in England. With Rohit’s renewed focus and the team’s current momentum, fans are hopeful for a bright future for Indian cricket.
