New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke recently about the strong ties between India and the United States. He referred to President Donald Trump as an “American nationalist,” emphasizing the complexity of international relations.
At an event at Delhi University’s Hansraj College, Jaishankar discussed how global diplomacy is changing. He noted that while he attended Trump’s inauguration and experienced a warm welcome, India’s approach to foreign policy will always focus on national interests.
Jaishankar acknowledged that Trump’s policies might shift global dynamics. However, he assured that India would adapt as needed, saying, “We may not agree on everything, but there will be many areas of agreement.” He also pointed out the solid personal rapport between Prime Minister Modi and Trump, highlighting how this relationship strengthens India-US ties.
He touched on India’s rising influence in the world. Jaishankar humorously noted how some non-Indians now claim a connection to India, thinking it might help them in travel situations.
Reflecting on his journey, Jaishankar shared how he unexpectedly transitioned from academia and diplomacy to politics. He said, “I never planned to be a bureaucrat. PM Modi encouraged me in a way that made it hard to refuse.”
He also mentioned the strong bond Indians abroad have with their homeland. “Those living outside always turn to us for support,” he explained.
