Safe Arrival: 256 Indian Students Evacuated from Iran to Delhi in Operation Sindhu

New Delhi: A Mahan Air evacuation flight safely landed at Delhi airport on Saturday, bringing 256 Indian students home. Most of these students are from the Kashmir valley. Their families had been anxiously waiting for news, and the relief was palpable as the students stepped off the plane, visibly tired but safe.

These students had been stranded in Iran amid rising tensions in the Middle East. They faced days filled with fear and uncertainty. “We’re grateful to the Government of India for their quick action and coordination with Iranian officials,” said the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association. They also mentioned that another flight carrying more students is expected to arrive later that night.

This flight marked the second group return within 24 hours under Operation Sindhu. The first flight, which brought back 290 students from Mashhad, also landed in Delhi late Friday. Indian authorities worked closely with Iranian counterparts to assist students traveling from Tehran to Mashhad. As part of this effort, Iran temporarily opened its airspace for the evacuations.

In total, about 1,000 Indian nationals are expected to be brought back through multiple flights. Additional flights, including one from Turkmenistan scheduled to land early Sunday morning, are on the agenda.

The operation has garnered heartfelt gratitude from families. “Thanks to everyone involved for their quick support and intervention,” the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association stated, reflecting the emotional relief felt by countless families.

Operation Sindhu was initiated by the Ministry of External Affairs in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which has disrupted air travel and left many individuals stuck abroad. On Thursday, 110 students were evacuated via Armenia and Doha.

Interestingly, this operation sheds light on how governmental response to international crises has evolved. In past evacuations, such as during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, thousands of Indians were swiftly brought back home under similar circumstances.
