Safely Dispose of Unused Medications: Join Us for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 25!

Do you have unused or expired medications at home? Penn State Health has a great opportunity for you to dispose of them safely. On Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can bring them to designated locations for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This is a chance to get rid of unwanted medications, needles, and syringes in a secure way.

Here are the drop-off locations:

  • Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Academic Support Building, 90 Hope Drive, Hershey
  • Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center, 2160 State Road, Lancaster
  • Penn State Health Medical Group – Colonnade, 32 Colonnade Way, State College
  • Penn State Health Medical Group – Elizabethtown, 1 Continental Drive, Elizabethtown
  • Penn State Health Medical Group – Nyes Road, 121 N. Nyes Road, Harrisburg
  • Penn State Health Medical Group – Palmyra, 941 Park Drive, Palmyra
  • Penn State Health Specialty Services, 429 N. 21st St., Camp Hill

This initiative is in collaboration with local police departments and the U.S. DEA to ensure safe medication disposal across the country.

Dr. Kenneth Wood, Penn State Health’s chief clinical officer, emphasizes the importance of these events, stating, “We’re dedicated to providing our community with a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted medications.” Since 2015, the health system has successfully collected over 7,000 pounds of medications and more than 300 sharps containers, highlighting the ongoing need for safe disposal options.

Besides the Take-Back Day, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has placed drug return boxes in three locations on campus. These are available during regular hours and offer a year-round solution for medication disposal. The locations are:

  • 30 Hope Drive, inside Entrance B
  • Penn State Cancer Institute, near the pharmacy
  • University Physician Center lobby, Door 4, near the pharmacy

Safe disposal of medications is crucial. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, improperly discarded medications can lead to environmental hazards and contribute to drug misuse. Participating in these events not only protects our community but also promotes a cleaner environment.

By joining efforts with local authorities, Penn State Health reinforces its commitment to community health and safety. It’s an easy way to make a positive impact. Don’t miss this opportunity!
