The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has revealed a data breach affecting over 60,000 individuals. They announced this incident last week, having discovered it in May. To address the problem, they brought in experts to investigate the security breach.
According to their notice, the unauthorized access took place between May 10 and May 30, 2024. This breach may have exposed sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, financial card details, and medical records.
In response, the food bank has notified law enforcement, changed their network passwords, and reviewed their security procedures. To help those impacted, they are offering free credit monitoring and identity protection services.
If you have questions, you can call their information line at 833-799-4195, available on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The food bank also reminded everyone that they can get free credit reports once a year from the major credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Reports can be ordered directly or through annualcreditreport.com.
Michael McAlpin, the marketing director, expressed concern about the growing frequency of such incidents. While they have not confirmed the exact number of people affected, a report filed in Maine indicates that 60,180 individuals are involved. The breach does not appear on the California Attorney General’s data breach site.
There’s no word yet on whether the food bank or its donors suffered financial losses due to the breach. Last fiscal year, the organization reported an income of $185.5 million, which included over $40 million in donations and nearly $93 million in non-monetary contributions. They have about 25,000 donors.
In terms of their services, the food bank distributed nearly 67 million pounds of food through local pantries, helping around 53,000 households each week in the San Francisco and Marin areas. The organization operates from its main facility in San Francisco and has a location on Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael.
