Santa Barbara Restaurants Join Forces to Feed LA Fire Survivors: A Heartwarming Community Effort

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Baristas in Santa Barbara are doing their best to support families affected by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. Handlebar Coffee was lively on Friday, filled with people seeking comfort amid the chaos.

“Many in our community are here because their air and water quality have suffered,” said Suzanne Grimmesey from the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness. “It’s heartwarming to see them enjoying a cup of coffee and a moment of normalcy in the midst of difficult times.”

Rachel Hechanova, a Pasadena resident, expressed her sorrow for those who lost their homes. “People often think L.A. is superficial, but it’s amazing to see the community come together. I’m proud to be from L.A. right now,” she shared. She and her husband, Mat Soleman, feel at home in Santa Barbara. “This town has a genuine sense of community. Everyone looks out for each other,” Mat added.

This week, local restaurants rallied to provide free meals for families participating in a project camp at the Santa Barbara Zoo. From well-known chains like Domino’s and Sprouts to beloved local spots like D’Angelo’s, everyone is contributing.

“Despite facing challenges themselves, our local businesses stepped up to help,” Grimmesey said. She praised Old Town Coffee, Dean Coffee, and Handlebar Coffee for keeping the community caffeinated during this tough time. “Dean partnered with D’Angelo’s for fresh bread to make sandwiches. When I picked up the food from Sprouts, the whole staff was there to assist me. It was heartwarming,” she recalled.

Additionally, the Isla Vista Co-Op in downtown Santa Barbara is offering discounts to first responders. “Whenever trouble arises, we find ourselves returning to Santa Barbara to regroup. I think we might end up here for good,” Hechanova reflected.
