Santa Fe High’s FFA Food Science Team Gears Up for Exciting National Convention & Expo

Santa Fe High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Food Science Team is gearing up for the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo after clinching first place at the state level.

The team includes seniors Sam Nichol, Taylor Batten, and Jerick King, along with junior Naomi Cooper. They took home the top prize in the Florida Food Science and Technology Career Development Event. This competition is all about building skills essential in the food science sector through a mix of individual and group tasks.

During the state contest, the team developed a food product, engaged in food quality and safety activities, and showcased their food science knowledge. They created Rip+Run, a package featuring four individually wrapped trail mixes, which they presented to judges from the University of Florida’s Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

Impressively, three members ranked among the top six scores at the state competition. Cooper placed second, Batten third, and King sixth, highlighting their talent and hard work.

All four team members are part of the Academy of Veterinary Assisting at SFHS, known for its success in career technical education. To prepare for the national competition, they are practicing with local food scientist Molly Sims, fine-tuning both their product development and presentation skills.

Brian Skipper, the academy director and FFA advisor, emphasized the commitment required for such achievement. “This type of success doesn’t just happen,” he noted. “Students invest countless hours under the guidance of dedicated teachers who truly care.”

The National FFA Convention & Expo will occur from October 21-24 in Indianapolis. This event is significant; more than 65,000 FFA members attended last year, showcasing the importance of agriculture education in today’s society.

As the food science industry continues to evolve, skills in this field are increasingly vital. For instance, the global food science market is projected to reach $60 billion by 2025, reflecting the growing demand for innovative food products and safety measures. Events like the National FFA Convention give young people a platform to explore these opportunities and connect with industry leaders.
