The University of North Carolina’s swimming and diving team recently celebrated a remarkable achievement. Twenty-two student-athletes made it onto the All-ACC Academic Team, showcasing their hard work in both sports and academics.
This year, the women’s team contributed 13 honorees, while the men’s team recognized nine.
Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, the criteria for this prestigious award will become a bit stricter. To qualify, athletes must be undergraduate students enrolled for at least one academic year, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00, and have achieved this GPA in their most recent semesters. They also need to have participated in either the ACC or NCAA Championships.

This achievement is significant, especially as young athletes balance rigorous training schedules with academic demands. A recent survey from the NCAA found that nearly 70% of student-athletes feel the pressure to excel in both areas. This statistic highlights the dedication required to achieve a place on the All-ACC Academic Team.
Experts like Dr. John Wiggins, a sports psychologist, emphasize the importance of this balance. He states, “Student-athletes develop crucial life skills through managing academics and sports. Those who excel often stand out in their future careers.”
