Santa Fe is exploring new ways to enhance public safety with gunshot detection technology.
SANTA FE, N.M. – The city of Santa Fe is considering a new system that can detect gunfire. This technology is already in use in Albuquerque and has shown promising results.
According to local police, these sensors will help improve safety, reduce violent crime, and aid in gathering evidence after a shooting. Mayor Alan Webber emphasized the need for modern technology to protect residents.
The sensors, known as ShotSpotter, can be installed on buildings and streetlights. They pinpoint the location of gunfire and alert police within minutes, allowing for a quicker response. “This technology offers timely and precise information about gunshots, helping police get there faster to potentially save lives,” said Webber.
One of the main benefits of this system is its accuracy in detecting actual gunfire. Often, reports from citizens can be unreliable; sometimes they might confuse a gunshot with backfires or fireworks.
The city plans to use a $380,000 grant for a one-year pilot program, targeting areas where gun violence is more common. “In Albuquerque, where the sensors have been active since 2020, gunshots in those zones dropped by 24% last year,” stated an APD representative.
Mayor Webber is optimistic about the proposal, which is set to be presented to the city council soon. If approved, we could see the first sensors deployed in a few months.
