Mumbai: Indian Railways recently launched a new initiative to bring regional cuisine to passengers on Vande Bharat trains. This move aims to improve the travel experience by offering local flavors and dishes that reflect the culinary diversity of India.
Passengers on the Nagpur–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express will have the chance to enjoy dishes like Maharashtra’s Kanda Poha and South Indian Dondakaya Karam Podi Fry. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh’s Andhra Kodi Kura is also on the menu. Other regional specialties include Gujarat’s Methi Thepla and Masala Lauki, which are featured on specific routes.
Each train serves unique regional dishes. For example, travelers can try Odisha’s Aloo Phulkopi on the Howrah–Puri route and Kerala’s traditional spread, including items like Kadala Curry and Palada Payasam, on the Kasargod–Trivandrum and Mangalore–Trivandrum trains. West Bengal’s Kosha Paneer is available on the Rourkela–Howrah Express, while Bihar’s Champaran Paneer can be found on the Patna-Ranchi route.
This new service follows discussions led by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He emphasized that local cuisine enhances the journey by allowing passengers to taste the culture of the areas they travel through. The idea is to gradually introduce regional food options across all trains in the network, connecting travelers to India’s rich culinary heritage.
According to a recent survey, nearly 70% of travelers prefer regional food options while on long journeys. This reflects a growing awareness of how food can enrich travel experiences.
