At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, a heavy silence filled the room as Superintendent Donna Kriger addressed the heartbreaking loss of three young men in the community.
“This has been a very tough month for our school district,” she said. Kriger, a teacher herself, shared how educators strive to make a positive impact on their students’ lives and how, in unexpected ways, students leave their mark on teachers as well.
Kriger reflected on the tragic events that took the lives of these young men. One young man fell through the ice on Shuswap Lake on February 8. The other two lost their lives in a car crash on Highway 1 just a week later, on February 15. Although Kriger didn’t know them personally, she absorbed the thoughts and feelings others shared about them.
“What I’ve heard repeatedly is that these were kind and caring individuals. They were friends, brothers, and sons. Their loss has deeply affected our community,” Kriger said, her voice filled with emotion.
She extended heartfelt sympathies to the families, adding, “They may be gone too soon, but they will never be forgotten.”
Chair Corryn Grayston also expressed the board’s sorrow, stating, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and to everyone affected—teachers, staff, fellow students, and friends. We all feel this loss deeply.”
Kriger also took a moment to acknowledge the two other young men who were injured in the accident. “We’re thinking of them and their families as they continue to heal. We hope for their speedy recovery,” she said.
