The Senegalese women’s basketball team has changed its training plans for the upcoming AfroBasket tournament in the Ivory Coast due to visa rejections. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced on Facebook that the team would instead train in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, stating it would be in a “sovereign and conducive setting.”

Five players and seven officials were denied visas to the U.S., leading to the cancellation of a ten-day training camp originally scheduled from June 22 to July 3. This decision comes amidst recent visa policy changes by the Trump administration, which aimed for stricter vetting of travelers. Although Senegal was not on the restricted list, the reasons for the visa denials remain unclear.

Coach Otis Hughley Jr., who previously managed the Nigerian women’s team, will lead the squad as they prepare for the tournament.
