Shock Price Surge: PS5 Costs Skyrocket in the UK and Europe – What You Need to Know!

Sony has increased the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles by 10-15% in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. They cite “a challenging economic environment” as the reason behind this decision. Rising import costs, particularly due to tariffs, are also likely playing a role. Many believe similar price hikes could be coming to the US market soon.

Most PlayStation 5 units are made in China, which faces hefty tariffs of 145% when importing to the US. Notably, game consoles aren’t included in recent tariff pauses, and this might force Sony to raise prices in the US as well. By raising prices in other regions, Sony may be trying to cushion the impact on its US prices, where they still stand the same for now.

The PS5 Digital Edition sees the biggest jump in price across all four regions. The standard version, which has a disc drive, is only going up in Australia and New Zealand, and not as much. Notably, the price of the PS5 Pro remains unchanged in all regions, while the add-on disc drive accessory is actually getting a slight price drop.

In a blog post announcing these changes, Sony mentioned “high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.” However, they didn’t address the impact of tariffs on their products. Gaming industry analyst Serkan Toto shared his insights with CNBC, indicating he wouldn’t be surprised if US prices increased soon, calling this moment “the right time” for such a move.

This price hike isn’t the first. Sony raised PS5 prices in many regions back in August 2022, also pointing to global inflation and currency challenges. Back then, they assured customers that prices in the US would remain stable, but there’s no confirmation of that this time.

As a point of reference, industry data shows that worldwide inflation rates rose by over 8% in 2022, impacting pricing across various sectors. This trend continues to affect consumer electronics.
