Joseph Garrett Duggar, known from the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting,” was arrested this week. He faces accusations of molesting a 9-year-old girl six years ago during a family vacation in Florida.
Duggar is charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, specifically involving a victim under 12 years old. He was detained in Tontitown, Arkansas, and is set to be extradited to Bay County, Florida. Local police acted after receiving a report of the abuse, which took place back in 2020.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, the now 14-year-old girl reported that Duggar inappropriately touched her multiple times. She described several events during the trip, including times when he asked her to sit on his lap or beside him on a couch. During these instances, he allegedly used a blanket as cover and touched her genitals and thighs.
The sheriff’s office noted that the girl said the incidents came to an end when Duggar apologized. Following these revelations, the girl’s father confronted Duggar, who confessed to the allegations.
The Duggar family first became well-known through their reality show, which ran for ten seasons from 2008. The series showcased the lives of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar along with their extensive brood. However, the show ended abruptly in 2015 after allegations concerning the eldest son, Josh Duggar, came to light. He was found to have abused several children, including his sisters. In 2022, Josh was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for related crimes involving child sex abuse images.
In light of these events, the public has reacted strongly. Social media platforms buzzed with discussions, as many expressed shock and disappointment due to the family’s troubled history. The Duggars have faced significant scrutiny over the past few years, and these latest accusations have opened up renewed wounds in their community.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing and reporting misconduct, especially when it involves minors. Support systems and legal avenues are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
