Shocking Revelation: 19% of U.S. Food Products Contain Synthetic Dyes – What You Need to Know!

On July 3, 2025, a study revealed that synthetic dyes are found in 19% of food products in the U.S., especially those aimed at children. The research, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, sheds light on the extent of synthetic dye usage.

Dr. Elizabeth K. Dunford and her team from the University of North Carolina analyzed data from 39,763 food and beverage items sold by the top 25 manufacturers in 2020. They discovered that over $46 billion in sales came from products containing these dyes. The most common dye was Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Red No. 40, appearing in 14% of the products.

Interestingly, products with synthetic dyes also had significantly higher sugar content—141% more than those without. On average, these dyed products contained 33.3 grams of sugar per 100 grams compared to just 13.8 grams in their dye-free counterparts. However, they contained lower levels of sodium and saturated fat. Dunford noted that companies might be using these colors to make sweet foods and drinks more appealing.

The trend of using synthetic dyes isn’t new. Historically, food manufacturers have relied on these additives to attract young consumers. In recent years, social media discussions around health and nutrition have increased scrutiny regarding food labels, pushing manufacturers to reevaluate their ingredient choices. Parents and health advocates are raising awareness about potential health risks associated with synthetic dyes, such as hyperactivity and allergies.
