The Denver Broncos have let go of outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite just over a week after his arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
Head coach Sean Payton addressed the decision on Wednesday night. He said, “After careful discussions, I met with Michael Wilhoite and informed him we have decided to part ways. We recognize the seriousness of the allegations and believe this is the right choice. I appreciate his contributions to the Broncos and hope he finds a positive path forward.”
Wilhoite was arrested on February 23rd. Court records show he faces felony charges for assaulting an officer, along with misdemeanor charges for obstructing an officer and criminal mischief.
The incident took place at Denver International Airport. Reports state that Wilhoite got into a dispute with an officer when he was asked not to leave his vehicle unattended. As the situation escalated, he allegedly punched the officer and then drove away after being tased. He was later taken into custody and had his first hearing the following day.
Before joining the Broncos, Wilhoite had a notable career in the NFL as a player from 2011 to 2017. He worked as a special teams assistant with Payton at the Saints in 2019. Wilhoite then spent time with the Chargers from 2021 to 2023 before returning to work with Payton in Denver earlier this year.
His next court appearance is scheduled for March 10th. The Broncos are now focusing on moving forward in a new direction without Wilhoite.
