SoftBank Cashes Out .8 Billion in Nvidia Shares to Shift Focus to OpenAI: What This Means for the Future

TOKYO (AP) — SoftBank, the Japanese tech giant, recently sold its stake in Nvidia for $5.8 billion. This decision aims to fund new investments, particularly in artificial intelligence through OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.

In the first half of this fiscal year, SoftBank’s profit soared to around 2.5 trillion yen (about $13 billion), nearly tripling from the same period last year. Their sales also increased by 7.7%, reaching 3.7 trillion yen ($24 billion).

SoftBank is known for its variable fortunes, largely due to diverse investments in various ventures, including its tech-focused Vision Funds. On the horizon, SoftBank’s chairman, Masayoshi Son, announced a major project called Stargate—a $500 billion investment in AI technology, alongside other tech leaders like Larry Ellison from Oracle.

SoftBank has heavily invested in OpenAI, planning to provide AI services in Japan together. This partnership reflects Son’s strategic shift toward AI, as seen by their recent divestment from Nvidia. The sale was lucrative, largely due to Nvidia’s rising market value. Just recently, Nvidia became the first tech company to hit a $5 trillion valuation.

Nvidia is also deeply involved in AI, planning a $100 billion investment in OpenAI to enhance its data center capabilities. This places SoftBank in a unique position, maintaining a strong relationship with Nvidia, as many of their investments rely on Nvidia’s technology.

However, some investors are cautious. Critics have compared the current surge in tech stock prices to the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s, where rapid growth led to a significant market crash.

Despite these concerns, SoftBank’s shares have nearly doubled in value over the past year, gaining nearly 2% on the stock market recently. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s shares faced a slight decline of 1.3%, although they had climbed 5.8% just a day before.

The tech landscape is shifting rapidly, highlighting the importance of strategic investments in emerging technologies like AI. For more insight into AI investments, check this report from McKinsey.
