South African Party Backs India’s Firm Stand Against Cross-Border Terrorism: A Collaborative Approach to Security

Recently, South Africa’s second-largest party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), voiced its support for the victims of the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. This attack, which took place on April 22, claimed 26 lives and highlighted ongoing concerns about cross-border terrorism.

An all-party delegation from India visited South Africa from May 27 to 29 to discuss these issues. Led by NCP MP Supriya Sule, the delegation aimed to share India’s perspective on combating terrorism linked to Pakistan. During their stay, they engaged with South African officials in Cape Town.

The team met with John Steenhuisen, the leader of the DA and South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture. According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Pretoria, the DA expressed deep sympathy for the victims and reaffirmed India’s determination to combat cross-border terrorism.

In discussions with Kenneth Morolong, South Africa’s Deputy Minister in the Presidency, the delegation emphasized India’s approach to counter-terrorism. This includes holding both terrorists and their supporters accountable. The Deputy Minister promised to take these concerns to the South African Presidency.

The Indian delegation also connected with other influential figures, including Les Govender, the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, and members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on International Relations.

An event in Johannesburg drew over 350 attendees, featuring expatriates and local Indian communities. Here, the delegation was straightforward about its view of Pakistan as a sponsor of terrorism, inviting the audience to participate in India’s fight against global terror.

This delegation is one of seven India has sent worldwide to discuss terrorism and gather support following the Pahalgam attack. Alongside Supriya Sule, members include leaders from various political parties such as the BJP and Congress, showcasing a united front in this critical issue.

Interestingly, India’s approach to counter-terrorism has evolved. Following the Pahalgam attack, India executed Operation Sindoor, striking terror infrastructure in Pakistan. This focused response exemplifies a shift towards more decisive action against threats from across the border.

Recent trends highlight a growing global awareness of terrorism’s impact. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, 79% of people in India view terrorism as a significant threat to their country. The delegation’s visit underscores a crucial step in fostering international cooperation to tackle this persistent issue.

As the Indian delegation heads toward Ethiopia and Egypt, they reinforce a message: unity and cooperation are vital in the ongoing battle against terrorism.
