MUSC Health is taking steps toward acquiring a larger share of Tidelands Health, a nonprofit organization that manages four hospitals and over 70 outpatient clinics. Currently, MUSC Health holds a 30% stake and has worked closely with Tidelands for years. Now, both organizations have received state approvals to move forward with the deal, which is set to close this fall.

This acquisition is crucial for Tidelands, which has faced financial challenges, including a reported $50 million deficit. By partnering with MUSC, Tidelands aims to stabilize and improve its services while maintaining local leadership. Bruce Bailey, Tidelands’ CEO, emphasized the potential this merger has to enhance care for local communities in Georgetown and Horry counties.

MUSC Health’s CEO, Dr. Patrick J. Cawley, shared his enthusiasm for the acquisition. He believes that the partnership will lead to better healthcare offerings and financial support for Tidelands.

Recent statistics paint a picture of Tidelands’ situation; their recent annual report showed a $22 million loss in operating income. The acquisition aims to reverse this trend. With more than 14,000 hospital admissions and over 661,000 outpatient visits in 2024, Tidelands plays a vital role in delivering healthcare in the region.

In exciting developments, Tidelands is also planning a new 36-bed hospital in Myrtle Beach, scheduled to open in 2028. Meanwhile, MUSC is working on a new cancer hospital and an outpatient surgery center in Charleston, with expected completion by 2028.
