A South Philadelphia dad is recovering after a brutal attack while walking home from work late at night. German Corona, 46, had just finished a long 13-hour shift when he noticed a group trailing him on South 10th Street.
The frightening moments before the assault were captured on nearby security cameras. “When I saw them coming, I crossed the street,” Corona said. But the men quickly closed in on him. He recalled, “They didn’t say a word.”
Suddenly, he felt a hard blow to the back of his head and lost consciousness. “I was out for about a minute. When I came to, I saw blood everywhere,” he added. The attackers continued to hit him while he was down, demanding his money. Fearing for his life, he quickly gave them what he had—around $200.
The assailants fled after taking his cash, leaving him with a broken nose and several staples in his head. Neighbors came out to help after hearing him scream, and paramedics arrived shortly after.
Corona described the attackers as mainly young men, most of whom wore masks. This incident has shaken not just him but the entire neighborhood. Loretta Iannuzzi, a local resident, expressed her fear, saying, “It’s horrifying to know that something like this can happen so close to home.”
Crime rates in urban areas have been a growing concern. In 2022, violent crime in Philadelphia rose by 5%, according to the FBI. Many residents feel uneasy walking alone, especially at night. Corona, who has always felt safe in his community, said he now hesitates to walk after dark.
“After ten years of feeling secure, I’m now scared to be outside at night,” he admitted. The incident is a reminder of the growing insecurity many feel in their own neighborhoods, prompting discussions about safety measures and community vigilance.
As Corona heals, he hopes his story encourages others to stay alert and look out for one another. After all, no one should have to live in fear in their own neighborhood.
