SpaceX Unveils Truth Behind Starship Flight 8 Explosion: Engine ‘Flash’ Identified as Key Failure Cause

SpaceX is preparing for its ninth test flight of the Starship rocket. Recently, the company shared details from its investigation into the explosion of the rocket’s upper stage, known as “Ship,” during its eighth test flight in March.

The eighth flight launched on March 6 from SpaceX’s facility in Texas. This mission was similar to the previous one, with the first stage booster successfully returning to the launch site. However, the upper stage had a different outcome. Both flights ended in large explosions over the Atlantic Ocean, visible from multiple locations, including Florida and the Bahamas.

During Flight 7, an engine fire caused the explosion. Flight 8 faced a different issue—a “flash” occurred in the upper stage, leading to an “energetic event” that shut down one of the engines, causing it to tumble and ultimately explode.

SpaceX described the flash occurring near a center engine. It was supposed to deploy payloads simulating Starlink satellites about 17.5 minutes after takeoff, but never got that far.

After the flash, communication with the spacecraft was lost. This triggered its automated self-destruct system. The main reason for the failure was identified as a hardware issue causing fuel to mix in a way it shouldn’t have.

While the upper stage faced challenges, the Super Heavy booster successfully returned, although not without some issues—it managed to relight 12 out of 13 engines for landing, after a less successful boostback burn.

To improve reliability, SpaceX has made adjustments, including better insulation and enhanced engine design. They’ve conducted over 100 test firings of the Raptor engine to ensure higher dependability.

According to the FAA, SpaceX has adequately addressed the causes of the mishap, clearing the way for future flights. The next mission is set for May 27 and will use a previously flown Super Heavy booster. SpaceX is eager to continue its journey, making significant strides in space exploration.
