St. Cloud State University recently announced that Selke Field is now available for purchase. This historic site, established in 1937 and named after the university’s longest-serving president, George Selke, carries a deep significance for the school and the community.
Selke Field features distinctive granite walls built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. This facility was once a hub for football games until 2004 when Husky Stadium opened. For many years, it served as the softball team’s home ground, but those games have now shifted to the newer stadium.
The field spans about 16.28 acres and holds an appraised value of $290,000. The university is seeking offers no lower than this amount, along with any additional costs for survey and appraisal.
Interim President Larry H. Dietz noted, “Selke Field holds a special place in the history of our university and community. While it is bittersweet to part with such a historic site, we are excited about the opportunities this sale will bring for future development and growth.”
Historically, many universities have sold land to facilitate development and generate funds for new projects. For instance, the University of California, Berkeley recently did the same to support housing for incoming students. These moves reflect a broader trend among educational institutions to adapt to current needs while honoring their past.
