MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is calling on residents to stay home and only travel for emergencies during the ongoing winter storm. Conditions are severe across the state, especially in northern Wisconsin, where blizzard conditions are making roads very dangerous and often impassable.
Travel is particularly discouraged in several counties, including Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Sheboygan, and Winnebago. In these regions, highways and rural roads are heavily affected, with low visibility and stranded vehicles complicating matters further. Emergency services may also face delays.
In the north-central area, it’s best to avoid travel in Adams, Florence, Forest, Green Lake, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood. WisDOT warns that these highways are either completely snow-covered or impassable.
The northwest part of the state also faces similar challenges, including counties like Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, and Polk. Drivers are advised to steer clear of east and westbound I-94 in Jackson County due to lane restrictions caused by the storm.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, winter weather causes over 116,000 accidents each year in the U.S. It’s crucial to heed advisories during such severe weather, as safety should always be the top priority.
