Meanwhile, U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg visited Kyiv but was absent from key discussions between U.S. and Russian officials, prompting skepticism about the effectiveness of his mission. Trump’s recent comments about speaking with Putin shocked European allies and raised eyebrows about the U.S.’s strategy regarding the conflict.
Trump emphasized that it may be unrealistic for Ukraine to join NATO and stated that regaining territories lost to Russia since 2014 would be challenging. He also suggested that European countries might need to take on more responsibility for peacekeeping efforts.
Critics of the U.S. administration expressed concern that too many concessions were made to Russia prematurely. Some believe the U.S. has weakened its bargaining position by implying that Ukrainian NATO membership is off the table. Economists note that this could embolden Russia in future negotiations.
As the situation unfolds, the Kremlin appears to be taking advantage of the discord between the U.S. and Ukraine. Russian officials have criticized Ukraine for relying heavily on U.S. military aid while questioning its accountability.
President Putin has expressed satisfaction with recent U.S.-Russia negotiations, calling the atmosphere friendly and open to discussion. In the face of potentially dire outcomes for Ukraine, including severe losses and extensive damage over three years of war, Zelenskyy remains hopeful. He maintains that a unified front with the U.S. and Europe is crucial for achieving lasting peace. Zelenskyy is determined to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself against future invasions and that its future is secure.
