A surprising fossil discovery along China’s Yangtze River is reshaping how scientists understand the origins of sponges and early animal life. For years, researchers have grappled with an intriguing puzzle. Molecular studies suggested sponges emerged around 700 million years ago, but clear fossils only showed up about 540 million years ago, leaving a substantial 160-million-year gap.

Now, a team led by geobiologist Shuhai Xiao has identified a 550-million-year-old sponge fossil that fits neatly into this missing period. This finding was published in the journal Nature.

What’s remarkable about this fossil is its history. Xiao first saw it through a photo shared by a colleague about five years ago. He was instantly intrigued. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I knew it was something special,” he said.

The team investigated various possibilities and ruled out sea squirts, anemones, and corals. What remained was a fascinating prospect: an ancient sponge. The fossil reveals a distinctive pattern, with a grid of box-like shapes divided into smaller units, hinting its closest relatives are glass sponges.

In size, this fossil contrasts sharply with expectations. “I anticipated early sponges to be tiny,” said Alex Liu from the University of Cambridge. “Surprisingly, this one is about 15 inches long with a complex body structure.”

Frustratingly, the early sponge record has been scant. Past research showed that sponge fossils became more mineralized over time. Backward tracing suggests the first sponges may have been soft-bodied, making them less likely to survive fossilization. Xiao noted, “If these early sponges were entirely organic, they wouldn’t leave traditional fossil signs unless exceptional conditions preserved them.”

This discovery highlights the rarity of preserving soft-bodied creatures. A previous study revealed a similar case of a sponge fossil preserved in a specific geological layer known to capture delicate organisms. The new Yangtze specimen serves as another window into these early life forms.

Now, scientists must rethink how they search for early animal life. If the first sponges had no mineral skeletons, many early creatures might have disappeared without a trace. “We need to explore uncommon environments where fragile organisms might have survived long enough to leave evidence of their existence,” Xiao emphasized.

In the grand scheme, this find fills a crucial gap in the timeline of life on Earth. The 160-million-year void in sponge fossils was never truly empty; it might have been home to creatures too delicate to endure the test of time. By adjusting the lens through which we view these ancient lives, scientists can gain better insights into the early chapters of our planet’s history.
