Imagine looking down from the International Space Station (ISS) and seeing shooting stars. NASA astronaut Chris Williams recently shared an amazing experience where he spotted a fireball from the cupola of the ISS.
On April 27, at about 10:40 PM GMT, while waiting for the Progress MS-34 cargo vehicle, Williams saw a bright object streaking below. He described it as a “light show” that split into smaller pieces, likely due to orbital debris breaking apart as it entered the atmosphere.
Interestinly, the fireball may have been linked to the recent launch of Progress MS-34, which occurred just two days earlier. The upper stage of the Soyuz rocket might have reentered Earth’s atmosphere at just the right moment, creating the dazzling display Williams witnessed.
Williams has been aboard the ISS since November 27, 2022, alongside two cosmonauts. The ISS currently also hosts four astronauts from NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission, including members from the European Space Agency. It’s a busy and exciting time in space!
