As Jude and Kristen’s siblings grew up, finding suitable healthcare providers for adults with developmental disabilities became a challenge. In 2023, the Schramm family attended the National Down Syndrome Society’s Adult Summit in Cincinnati. They were inspired by a presentation from UC Health’s Freeman Center and felt a strong desire to contribute.
“It’s hard to be around them and not want to get involved,” Kristen remarked about the Freeman Center staff.
This fall, the Freeman Center is set to open a new facility at UC Health’s Victory Parkway campus. This expansion will significantly increase patient care space, providing specialized services and advanced equipment tailored for adults with developmental disabilities.
To honor their siblings, the Schramms are making a strong commitment to this new space. They are funding two rooms—one for behavioral health and another for exams—in memory of Erin and David.
Jude expressed the heartfelt motivation behind their gift, saying, “Maybe it won’t help our siblings directly, but we can make a difference in our community.” He paused, emotions rising in his voice. “Our siblings have often gone unnoticed. This allows us to give them a legacy.”
The Growing Need for Specialized Care
Experts note that the demand for healthcare services tailored to adults with developmental disabilities is increasing. A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that around 1 in 6 children aged 3 to 17 have a developmental disability. As these children grow into adulthood, the need for appropriate healthcare solutions becomes even more pressing.
Community Impact
Social media reactions emphasize the importance of community involvement in such initiatives. Many advocates share stories of how similar facilities have changed lives, sparking discussions about the need for more accessible healthcare options.
Additionally, by 2024, the Freeman Center aims to establish partnerships with local organizations to raise awareness and improve services for this demographic, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in healthcare.
This story reflects a growing trend where families are stepping up to support initiatives that honor and assist their loved ones, making a lasting impact on the community. For further reading on the challenges and solutions in this area, visit the National Down Syndrome Society at NDSS.org.
