Workers at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the Twin Cities are feeling the impact of a federal government shutdown. They might miss their first full paycheck this Friday since funding for the Department of Homeland Security stopped last month.
At the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, volunteers are stepping in. They’re distributing boxes of food to support TSA workers during this tough time. One agent shared that they’re exhausted. This is the third time in just six months their pay has been disrupted because of government funding issues.
On Wednesday, VEAP, a local nonprofit in Bloomington, donated 350 boxes filled with non-perishable food items to help workers get by. According to CBS News, many TSA workers across the country have quit, and callout rates are increasing.
Neal Gosman, treasurer of AFGE Local 899, expressed frustration. He believes that TSA workers have become pawns in political disputes. “There could have been a budget passed this year. This lack of funding is a failure of those in charge, both in the Trump administration and Congress,” he stated.
Despite the challenges, one TSA agent remains committed to her job, saying she’ll show up for work regardless of payment.
As of 2023, recent data highlights that nearly 25% of TSA workers reported considering leaving the agency due to pay instability and job satisfaction issues. This situation mirrors past instances during government shutdowns, where federal employees faced similar hardships.
A survey by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) in 2022 showed that morale among TSA agents dropped significantly during funding gaps, impacting security readiness at airports.
This ongoing issue reflects broader trends in labor relations and the critical importance of stable funding in ensuring the safety and security of air travel.
