Suspect to Appear in Court for Fatal Shooting of Loyola University Chicago Freshman Sheridan Gorman: Key Updates and Details

A defendant is set to appear in court, charged with the murder of Sheridan Gorman, a Loyola University Chicago student. This tragic incident took place last week in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, just north of the university campus.

On Monday, Jose Medina, 25, will face a judge to determine if he will stay in custody. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon. The shooting occurred last Thursday while Gorman, 18, was walking with friends near the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach. A masked gunman approached and opened fire, striking Gorman in the head. Sadly, she died at the scene. Police have indicated that this was a random act of violence.

Medina, a Venezuelan migrant who has allegedly been living in the U.S. illegally since 2023, was arrested on Friday night, close to where the shooting happened. Before this incident, he faced charges of retail theft but did not appear in court, resulting in a warrant for his arrest.

In the aftermath, the Loyola community and residents of Rogers Park have come together, holding vigils and leaving flowers to honor Gorman’s memory. She was a freshman from Yorktown, New York, just starting her college journey.

Federal immigration officials have requested that Medina not be released, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions.

This distressing event has sparked discussions about gun violence and safety in public spaces, echoing similar tragedies across the country. According to recent data from the Gun Violence Archive, over 20,000 gun-related incidents have occurred in the U.S. this year alone, prompting calls for intensified community safety measures.

As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning, reflecting on the loss of a promising young life.
