I haven’t played the game, so I can’t say for sure. But this season has raised many questions about the show’s journey. Season 1 felt like a grand adventure, focused on a hero on a mission to save the world. Then came the twist in the finale when Joel radically changed the narrative.

Now, we’re left asking: Where do we go from here? What happens when a “chosen one” no longer feels chosen?

The Season 2 finale delves into these questions, presenting a journey that’s both exciting and confusing. Ellie, in particular, comes to understand that revenge can be messy and doesn’t always bring satisfaction.

Ellie’s journey starts as she returns from Lakehill Hospital. Contrary to what we thought last week, she didn’t kill the infected Nora. Instead, she tortured her just enough to discover hints about Abby’s whereabouts. Ellie leaves Nora behind, ultimately doomed to become a zombie.

As she shares this with Dina, her tone is low and serious. It’s a moment of vulnerability, and while Dina tends to clean Ellie’s wounds, Ellie opens up about why Abby and her crew targeted Joel. Dina’s dispassionate response is, “We need to go home.”

Much of the first half of the episode shows Ellie and Jesse trying to find Tommy to escape Seattle. It’s a tense trip. Jesse is understandably irked by Ellie’s casual attitude, and Ellie isn’t impressed by what she sees as Jesse’s self-righteousness.

This seesaw of emotions reflects a common theme in many narratives. In seeking revenge, individuals can lose sight of what they truly want. Research shows that with 66% of people feeling unsatisfied after seeking revenge, the show effectively mirrors this reality.
